Contributing with the Donate Button Step-by-Step

They enter their payment details.

Donors choose to support your cause and enter the amount they wish to donate.

2. They enter their payment details.

Your donors are taken to a secure payment page on PayPal's site showing their gift amount. To pay by credit card, they fill out the easy payment form. If they prefer to pay using PayPal, they log in to their PayPal account and pay in as few as three clicks. Before completing the payment, your donors see a summary to review key information, such as their address details.

3. They view their payment confirmation.

Upon completion, your donors see a payment confirmation page that they can print for their records. They’ll also receive a confirmation email. You’ll get one too.

4. And they return to your site.

Your donors can be sent back to your site immediately after payment. You choose where they go, perhaps to a thank-you page or back to your home page. (Set this up in your Website Payment Preferences on the Profile tab.) We'll send you their contact information for future appeals.

5. You collect the donation.

When your donor's payment goes into your PayPal account, transfer the money to your bank account (bank transfers usually take 2—3 days to clear) or spend it online anywhere PayPal is accepted.

It's easy to start accepting donations online. From here, it can take as little as 15 minutes to get up and running.

  • Confirm Nonprofit Status

    To receive discounted rates, sign up for a PayPal Business account. Select Nonprofit as the business type, and Charity as the category.

    To confirm your nonprofit status, log in to your PayPal account one day after initial signup and submit the following items through the Resolution Center:

    • Evidence of tax-exempt status.
    • Bank statement or voided check in your organization's name.
    • PayPal email account.
    • Contact information.
    • Description of your organization and type of payments it wants to accept (such as donations or merchandise payments).

    Discounted pricing will not apply to your account until you have received an email from PayPal verifying your nonprofit status. See our Get Started Guide for more details.

    If you are not a 501(c)(3), you can still use PayPal with our standard pricing. All other nonprofits pay our standard rates. To receive discounted rates, sign up for a PayPal Business account. Select Nonprofit Organization as the business type and Nonprofit as the category.

    To confirm your nonprofit’s status, log in to your PayPal account one day after initial sign-up and submit the following items through the Resolution Center:

    • Evidence of tax-exempt status
